I love wolves, but they still are animals in nature (humans are also animals, but our environment is complete different than bare nature). They are prime hunters and killers. Wolves and humans have been killing each other for centuries.

So what if you've never been attacked by a wolf? I've seen people go up close to tigers, bears and crocodiles without getting hurt, but I never heard those people say that this demonstrated that they were not dangerous. It seems only wolf lovers make such absurd declarations.

Wolves are dangerous creatures who have been known to tear the throats out of their handlers at zoos and they kill plenty of herbivores. They also frequently let their pups starve to death instead of feeding them. Do a wee bit of research on why people dislike these animals.

Decent picture though.

I think that wolves have been given a pretty bad rap for many thousands of years. And now -- between over-population, population expansion to rural farm lands, and over-hunting of wild game -- people have set them up to continue to be seen as a threat.

People seem to neglect the fact that dogs are wolves that never grow up; they're puppies for their entire lives, always relying on humans for survival. Wolf is basically man's best friend that's been ostracized as the human population expands rapidly into wolf territory. The main harm wolves can cause is to the farm animals and livestock at times when hunting is difficult or prey is otherwise scarce. When given their space, they work very well to keep the ecosystem balanced (without wolves or other top-level predators, there could be many deer/moose or other prey, the vegetation may become scarce and these prey-animals could die of starvation.) By the same token, people hunt moose and deer and may make the herds to thin for wolves to sustain themselves on wildlife alone; they would have to hunt easier prey and farm animals are some of the easiest prey for wolves to catch.

All that aside, I think this is a beautiful photo and I'm consistently awed by your ability to capture such stunning photos of wolves and other wildlife! Keep up the wonderful work! :tighthug:

In the past they were indeed misunderstood because of ignorance (being Spanish, the horrible things that were done to the Iberian wolf come to my mind), and I think some of that ignorance still remains nowadays.
Sure, they sometimes prey on livestock, wich is one of the things why they are looked down upon, at least here, but they only do it when they have no other choice.
People tend to forget that WE are the ones invading THEIR territory and that they have as much right to survive as we do. It's a shame, really...

As for the photo, I love the wolf's eyes and presence. Great shot, as always ^^.

I think now they are misunderstood in BOTH directions. Some people think of them as angels, others as demons - both are wrong. And both ways of thinking, I think, are bad. See the animal for what it is and know how to respect it.

I totally agree, the hate has no reason. When bears, lynx, wolverines or foxes kill something it is natures way, but when wolves do, they are called monsters.

Interesting. Guess I dont know anyone who actually worries that wolves might hunt a person. The world was a different place in the past. Still, I live with coyotes, pumas, and the occassional wolf in the western US, and in reality, there are no real reasons to worry about these predators. Even livestock is more likely to be killed by something else, not a wild predator. They are indeed beautiful!

I think the hatred towards wolves originates from Europe, because I think European wolves were aggressive but now extinct. Not sure though. But this one is sure cute!!:D Great pic
